CSN: 'He was terrible,' Suggs says of Tebow

Denver Broncos teammate Brady Quinn’s critical comments about quarterback Tim Tebow are generating headlines across the Internet, but Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs also is quoted in the GQ article that contains Quinn’s remarks.

Suggs’ comments are similarly negative and surely will be recalled when the Ravens and Denver Broncos meet next season in Baltimore.

In the GQ article titled “The Year of Magical Stinking: An Oral History of Tebow Time,” authored by sportswriter Michael Silver, Suggs had this to say:

“They say we were giving him a hard time because he’s a Christian. No, that’s not it! We were giving him a hard time because he was terrible.”

Suggs, who was named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year earlier this month after leading the Ravens with 14 sacks in 2011, made frequent references to Tebow during the season, usually mocking the Broncos’ quarterback, who dominated media coverage of the NFL during the season.

“I mean, it’s an insult to us players,” Suggs told GQ. “You know, wins are hard to come by in this league, and if I was Denver’s defense, I would feel a certain way – they’re not allowed to, because they’re all on one team, but people are making it look like Tim Tebow is the kid from Foxborough (Tom Brady), which that couldn’t be more opposite. It’s just crazy that we’re calling him a phenomenon when basically he’s mediocre. (Carolina rookie) Cam Newton is a way better quarterback than Tim Tebow, and we don’t have a Cam Newton phenomenon.”

Quinn, who served as Tebow’s backup, has apologized for his comments in the GQ article. He attributed some of Tebow’s success to luck and questioned Tebow’s humility.

Suggs likely will not be apologizing.

Denver Broncos Should Re-Sign Brady Quinn to Compete against Tim Tebow

The Denver Broncos are going to add quarterbacks this offseason to challenge Tim Tebow for the starting job, and one of them needs to be Brady Quinn.

On Monday, Broncos head coach John Fox told the Denver Post that he believes the team will add two quarterbacks to compete with Tebow.

“Numbers wise that’s accurate. Who, what, where, when, what market—it’s still way too early how we get those quarterbacks,” Fox said.

On Tuesday, the March issue of GQ quoted Quinn sounding extremely bitter about Tebow’s rise as the starter and Quinn never getting his chance to shine. He took several shots at Tebow, but later went on Twitter saying the reporter messed everything up.

It sounds like there may be some beef between the two quarterbacks, and there is no better way to settle it than out on the field.

Quinn believes he should have had a chance to start this past season, but the fans chanting for Tebow helped push the popular quarterback into the starting position.

Once there, Tebow never made it look pretty, but he won. He was beyond clutch last year, which is what you want from your quarterback.

You’d also like for the starter to be able to thrive all game long as opposed to the final minutes of the game. Denver is smart in bringing in quarterbacks to compete against Tebow, as it will hopefully help him improve his game. Tebow actually needs a challenge, though, and he would get that from Quinn.

Since Quinn clearly thinks he could start over Tebow, the Broncos need to bring him back and give him a shot. Quinn already knows the system, so it’s more of a fair competition between him and Tebow.

Tebow would have the upper hand if the Broncos brought in two guys unfamiliar with what the team runs.

It’s a mystery how much faith Denver has in Quinn, or even Tebow for that matter, which is why the Broncos need to let these two go head-to-head.

Quinn was very brash with his comments in GQ, and if he truly feels he is better than Tebow than he deserves a chance to prove it.

Denver has a lot to think about in the coming month or so, but its best bet is to re-sign Quinn because even if he doesn’t beat out Tebow, the Broncos will have a backup quarterback that has experience with the offense, and that is crucial.

Colorado: Avalanche warnings & watches in the backcountry

Colorado avalanche danger

The avalanche danger ranges from moderate in the south San Juans to high in the Steamboat zone. Click for more info.

New snow, high winds combined to increase the risk of snowslides

By Bob Berwyn

SUMMIT COUNTY — Copious amounts of new snow and high winds in Colorado’s north-central mountains have combined to push the avalanche danger into the red zone once again. An avalanche warning in effect for the Steamboat zone and and avalanche watch for the Summit Vail zone, along with a continued high-wind warning through Thursday morning.

The Steamboat area has seen between 3 and 4 feet of snow in the past week, and high winds have built extensive windslabs on north to east to south aspects, where both triggered and natural slides are likely the next few days. Some of the avalanches will be large and destructive. Under the warning, travel is not recommended in avalanche terrain.

Already this week, observers in the Steamboat area triggered small soft slab avalanches on steep southerly aspects.

“Expect soft slabs and loose avalanches that run easily and could run fast and far. These small slides may break down into older snow layers to create large and destructive avalanches. Persistent slabs are gaining strength, but now have a large load on top. Observers still find layers breaking fast and clean,” the CAIC wrote in the warning.

In the Summit-Vail zone, a storm expected to hit late Wednesday evening could also bump the avalanche danger to high, the CAIC said, issuing an avalanche watch for the area. A watch means the danger is expected to increase within 24 hours.

With a strong jet stream, decent moisture and a sharp cold front, the Wednesday night storm could produce a burst of intense snow, and the winds will deposit any new accumulations into tender new slabs atop an already fragile snowpack, leading to the likelihood of human-triggered and natural avalanches Thursday morning. Some recent windspeed reports are online here.

An avalanche watch means that if forecast weather verifies, the avalanche danger will rise to high in the watch area.  This watch is in effect until 12 PM Thursday at which time an update will be provided if avalanche warnings become necessary.
